The Cine Kodak 'Model B' (Data furnished courtesy of Richard A. Freedman) I have resolved the Model B into types, based on the 68 examples I now have, as follows: Type 1: Fixed focus recessed lens, stops from f6.5 to f16. No eye level finder on top. Type 2: Same as Type 1 but with the addition of the eye level finder. Type 3: Fixed focus recessed lens, stops from f3.5 to f16. Portrait lens added for subjects from 4 to 8 feet away. The portrait lens is swung into position in front of the taking lens by a wheel at the front top. This wheel also swings a red filter in front of the reflex viewfinder to indicate that the portrait lens is in front of the taking lens. Type 3A: Has a circular ring around the lens like Type 4 (Type 3 has a flat front) Type 4: Similar to Type 3 except that the portrait lens is for subjects 2 to 5 feet away. The portrait lens is swung into position in front of the taking lens by a sprng-loaded lever on the left side. The lever must be held down when filming with the portrait lens as when it is released the portrait lens swings out of position. Therefore, there is no red filter as it is not needed. Circular ring around lens. Type 4A: Front housing has (unused) slot in top for the wheel like Type 3 but no wheel, has the lever. (Probably few made to use up older parts?) Type 4B: No circular ring around lens, flat front like Type 3. Type 5: Lens is external to body. Lens is a Kodak Anastigmat f1.9, 25mm, non-interchangeable mount. Stops are f1.9 to f16. Focusing range is infinity to 2 feet. Type 6: Similar to Type 5 except that the lens is in an interchangeable mount. Type 6A: Same as Type 6 but covering is brown. (Came with matching color case) Type 6B: Same as Type 6 but covering is grey-green. (Came with matching color case) There are a number of minor variations, e.g. black painted or chrome finish winding crank, different front info. plates, etc., that I have not yet fully researched which will may result in further variations which will be identified by a suffix letter to the Type number. NOTE: Types 6, 6A, 6B will sometimes be found with a folding viewfinder eyepiece attached to the rear of the left side of the body. This was added by some previous owner for use with the long focus 78mm f4.5 lens. It is not considered to be a variation warranting a suffix letter. Further information will be added when I get the time. You may want to look at the Model Bs in your collection to see which ones you have. If you have examples with differences that appear to warrant a suffix letter, please let me know. richard@cinekodak.org
